  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 2 medium Granny Smith apples peeled and diced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg

Additional Elements

  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ cup chocolate chips optional
  • 2 tablespoon butter melted

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line an 8x8 inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  • Dice apples and toss with cinnamon and nutmeg.
  • Whisk granulated sugar, brown sugar, applesauce, eggs, oil, melted butter, and vanilla together.
  • Sift flour, cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder in another bowl.
  • Fold dry mixture into wet ingredients. Stir in diced apples and chocolate chips if using.
  • Bake brownies for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out with moist crumbs.
  • Let brownies cool in pan for at least 15 minutes before slicing into squares.
