Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks

  • 2 pounds Ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1 cup Crushed saltine crackers
  • 1 large Egg
  • ½ cup Whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • ½ teaspoon Black pepper

For the Gravy and Toppings

  • 3 tablespoon Butter
  • 8 oz Sliced mushrooms
  • 3 tablespoon All-purpose flour
  • 2 cups Beef broth
  • 1 cup Heavy cream
  • 4 medium Russet potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 ½ cups Shredded cheddar cheese
  • Fresh parsley for garnish optional

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • In a large bowl, mix ground beef, crushed crackers, egg, milk, and seasonings. Shape into patties.
  • Brown patties in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Set aside.
  • In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté mushrooms. Stir in flour and cook 1 minute. Slowly whisk in beef broth and cream to form gravy.
  • Layer thinly sliced potatoes, browned patties, and prepared gravy in a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • Cover dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Uncover, top with shredded cheddar, and bake an additional 10–15 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  • Rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
